I have recently encoutered 2 errors with Mathcad's symbolic solver

Has anyone seen similar behaviour to that shown in the attached Mathcad sheet?  I am losing confidence with the Mathcad 15  symbolic solver and don't know how to proced.  Any suggestions or comments are welcome.

I wish PTC put more of their resources in improving the symbolic server and ensuring graphics output  is report ready.  It is tedious and time consuming to have to export data to more capable plotting programs.

I do not see tha Prime is going to be a significant improvement over Mathcad 15 and it will seemingly require our reseach group to convert tens of GB's of existing Mathcad files and learn a new program. I admit to being ignorant about the capabilities of Prime and am ready to be corrected.

Mathcad 15 - Preferred units in results?

I am using Mathcad 15 for a course in Quantum Chemistry. Is there a way to set default units so that they match those commonly accepted in the dicipline?

For instance, when I calculate wavenumber, my result is in m^-1 rather than the commonly accepted cm^-1, and frequency is in s^-1 rather than Hz.

Thanks.

Solving Equations for undefined variable with units

So, I am confused on how to solve an equation for an unknown with units. I am not sure if I am having unit problems or if my way of stating variables is incorrect. I am simply just trying to solve for the variable "d" which should have units in length. How should I declare variables that rely on other known and unknown variables? When should I solve an equation symbolically and just numerically in terms of getting proper units? I am used to using maple 16 so switching to MathCAD has been fairly intiutive but I am failing to pick up on certain features. If you fix my MathCAD code, I should be able to figure it out from the fix solution. Thanks!

help exporting formula to text

Can anyone tell me how to convert a MathCAD formula to text? If I'm performing a symbolic manipulation on a complex expression, sometimes I will get the message "The Result is too long to display here: save to clipboard?" and the information in the clipboard is a text version of the formula. I cannot find a way to FORCE it to do this, short of performing arbitrary symbolic manipulations until the expression becomes too large to display.

What I'd like to do is take a lot of large formula that I've symbolically created in mathcad, and turn them into text so that I can paste them into a C program.

I've seen posts here to the effect that going from text to formula is hit or miss for different people, but I was hoping someone could tell me how to go the other way.

I'm using MathCAD 2001, by the way.

This variable is undefined error when using Given/Find function, why?

Hi Everyone,

I have been using mathcad for some time but it is not until recently i started trying the Given / Find functions.

However, every time i try it, it gives me "This variable is undefined" error right after i enter the Find(...) command and hit the "=" button.

I even tried to follow the quick sheet in the tutorial/help document and it is still happening.

Could someone help me out?

Greatly apprecitated!

more flexible notation

just a thought for a possible feature suggestion. one of the still incompletely fulfilled promise of mathcad is a documentation of work in the manner that one would see it in manual (pen and paper) work. especially as an instructor, where students may be easily confused with notation, it would be nice to use conventional notation in the mathcad worksheet. it is mostly there, but there are some small but annoying gaps. for example, i would like to use a subscript (or even superscript) asterisk as part of a variable name, but mathcad automatically thinks a subscript means a multiplication. an overbar indicating a mean would also be nice, though i can imagine some implementation problems there. there are doubtless other examples in individual application fields. of course, maybe such things can already be done and i simply don't how to do them?

fitting using Linfit

Hello folks, I would be grateful if someone could help me with this general query ...

I have a measurement data set consisting of 186 points, I'm simply fitting a polynomial using the linfit command. The polynomial is:

f(x) := 1 + x + x^2 + x^3 + x^4 .... x^6

The linfit function fits fine if I use just 133 points or less which ever part of the measured data I look at. When I try to fit this equation 134 points or greater it fails.

I'm suspecting that the problem is either to do with how Mathcad goes about fitting or maybe something more fundamental such as the theory of line or curve fitting itself. I know I could try another function but I'm a bit pressed for time to try to find another especially when the one above works so well.

If anyone could shed any light on this I would be grateful. Many thanks in advance!

Cheers, Dinesh

Workings of the cspline and interp function

I am doing a spline fit (probably cspline). I can get it to work fine in Mathcad but I need to program the function into a microprocessor. Therefore, I need to extract the coefficients generated by the cspline function and determine how interp applies them.

Any idea how I can get that information?

Thanks in advance

Simultaneous equations - symbolically

I'm trying to solve a system of 5 simultaneous equations symbolically, as per attached file. I think it's fairly obvious that the answers are likely to be quite large expressions.

I get the error message, "This array has more elements than can be displayed at one time. Try using the 'submatrix' function".

Is this just another meaningless error message? If not, can anyone tell me how I can use the submatrix function to get to the answers (which I assume are in there somewhere)? I'm quite happy to run the program 5 times to get the 5 answers, if necessary.

Failing that, does anyone have any other suggestions for solving this problem?

Units incorrect? lbm, lbf

$

MathCad (2001i Pro) defines lbf (pound force) as 32.174 mass * length / time**2. Since we all recognize this as acceleration due to gravity we know the units are lbm, ft, and seconds squared. But the textbook definition of lbf is the above divided by the "gravitational constant" also 32.174 but the units include lbf in the denominator. This is critical; it shows that on earth, lbf and lbm are equivalent. But MathCad doesn't see it that way and it has been playing havoc with some gas calculations I'm doing. Any comments?

Mathcad 15 won't run on Windows 7

Hi

I have a computere with windows 7 x64 there, no matter what i do, won't run mathcad 15.

The installation seems to be completed without any problems, but when i try to run the application, the splash screen shows up, but after a short period of time, the application crash without any error messages except the Windows own "Mathcad application has stopped working".  I have another computer also with windows 7 x64, and here the application will start without any problems .  The only differense between these computers is that the first one is a "samsung" installation width showelware and all, and computer nr. 2 is a vanilla installation of windows.

I have tried the following

Reinstallation of MSXML 4.0 SP.2

---------||--------- of .Net, i can't remember the version, but it was the newest I could find.

Reinstallation of the computer (with the samsung disk)

But nothing seems to work. Mathcad 14 worked without any problems...

I hope somebody will help, and sorry for my bad english, i´m a dane

How to add two graph in Mathcad

Hi, I am trying to model solar cell characteristics in partial shading. i need to add two graphs which i have already plotted in Mathcad. Please suggest me any general method. Further how to add independent variable? I have thought of this way once but not possible.can two independent variable ( for example I have f(x1) and f(x2)) be added to form a third variable. (I mean is it possible to define f( x1+x2). I tried the same in mathcad but it seem impossible. if this two functions are already plotted how to get the superimposed graph of two? Thanking you in advance Have a nice weekend

Mathcad Prime 2.0 plotting functionality. Argh!!

I am so frustrated by Mathcad's continued plotting ineptitude I can hardly take it.  We waited for years and years for the old Mathcad to add the flexibility needed to make decent looking plots and it NEVER happened.  Now in my first few hours of working with Prime 2.0 (I skipped 1.0) I am already extremely frustrated by basic stuff that really makes me wonder about the development team.  Come on, guys, I know you can do better than this!

Contour plots:

- z-axis scale/color bar is now included, hooray!

  - however, it's location and orientation are fixed (bottom, horizontal)

  - why can't I move it to the right and make it vertical?

- The labeling interval of the z-axis scale bar is tied to the number of

contour intervals.  No!!!  If I want a lot contours then my labels get

all mashed together and become completely unreadable.  Totally

  unacceptable.

- If I change the weight of the lines that separate the contours, the

line weights in the z-axis scale bar do not change correspondingly.

  Come on!!

- No secondary y-axis in the second major release??  Very poor.

I need this all the time.

- I can't change the font or the font size used for the axis labels.  I've

only been waiting for this for uh...let's see...how old am I now??

- Why does the x- and y-axes extend beyond the minimum value set

for the axes?  This leads to odd/awkward-looking axes, at least, not

like any plots I've seen or want to make myself.

- Why can't I use a ticked/labeled box around my plots?  It seems the

only option is the two intersecting axes.

- Um, how do I put titles on my plot axes?  Am I just being dense here?

- Thanks for letting me rant.  I guess it's export back to Excel for now

for a lot of my plots.  Not that I like Excel's plots, either, believe me.

But at least with fiddling I can get a decent-looking, READABLE plot

out of Excel to present to other engineers and scientists, or include

in a paper.  Not possible with what I've seen in Prime 2.0.  Sigh...

Converting Mathcad File to PDF

Whenever I convert a Mathcad file to PDF format by printing to Adobe PDF, the content of the pages get displaced downwards both in the pdf file and the original Mathcad file. This happens when I have many pages in the Mathcad file. Is there something I'm supposed to set in the printer settings to prevent this from happening?

Radian to degrees

I am new to using MathCad, but it seems that I should be able to figure out how to change from radians to degrees. The manual is pretty much worthless, and the help section merely states that MathCad gives results of trig functions in radian mode. No kidding. Any help is appreciated, and yes I feel like a moron.

Unable to create 12.0 engine factory' error

Hello, I am troubleshooting an installation of Mathcad 13.1. When launching from the machine with the installation there are no problems. However, This machine is on a network and the goal is to allow user client machines to launch the application served by the machine with the installed version of Mathcad 13.1. When a client machine tries to launch Mathcad from the mapped network drive the error "Unable to create 12.0 factory" is displayed. Has anyone any experience running Mathcad locally on a client machined from a server with this error? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!
